Intrauterine insemination (IUI) or artificial insemination is a simple fertility treatment procedure in which small amount of prepared sperm (washed sperm) is directly implanted into the woman’s uterus so that fertilization of an egg can occur. Though IVF (in vitro fertilization) treatment is often the most advanced option of achieving a pregnancy, in some circumstances, our doctors suggest a simpler, less invasive method.
When IUI is performed ?
Intrauterine insemination or artificial insemination is the most common procedure and is performed when there are abnormal semen parameters such as low sperm count or low motility, or an incompatibility between the sperm and the cervical mucus. This procedure can also be performed to overcome problems connected with a male partner’s inability to ejaculate inside the woman’s vagina due to premature ejaculation, impotence or other medical conditions. In some cases, IUI treatment increases the chances of pregnancy because the sperm are placed directly in the uterus, bypassing the cervix and improving the delivery of the sperm to the egg.
